Google’s tiny chip represents a big bet on IoT

Image
Google is taking two steps – one in hardware and one in software – to bring its analytics and machine learning capabilities to edge networks and even to individual Internet of Things (IoT) devices to better deal with the data generated by a growing number of IoT devices, the company said at its Cloud Next technology conference. The first step is Google extending the features of its Cloud IoT software platform to edge networking. The second is a tiny chip that could be integrated in IoT devices themselves and process the data they collect before transmitting it. Edge computing – which describes an architecture where a specialized computer sits very near to the IoT endpoints themselves to perform analysis and data processing from those endpoints, as opposed to sending that information all the way back to the data center – is very much the up-and-coming model for IoT deployment, particularly in use cases that have strict requirements around latency. However, Christian Rena...

Web Security Basics

Image
Web security, your site and your network :- Web sites are unfortunately prone to security risks. And so are any networks to which web servers are connected. Setting aside risks created by employee use or misuse of network resources, your web server and the site it hosts present your most serious sources of security risk. Web servers by design open a window between your network and the world. The care taken with server maintenance, web application updates and your web site coding will define the size of that window, limit the kind of information that can pass through it and thus establish the degree of web security you will have. Is your site or network at risk? "Web security" is relative and has two components, one internal and one public. Your relative security is high if you have few network resources of financial value, your company and site aren't controversial in any way, your network is set up with tight permissions, your web server is patched up to date ...

The Dismal State of Healthcare IoT Security

Image
The healthcare industry has been moving toward medical equipment connectivity to speed up data entry and recording, as well as improve data accuracy. At the same time, there has been a shift toward incorporating consumer mobile devices, including wearables, so that healthcare providers can monitor patients' health more closely and improve treatment. "The demand for connected devices has increased rapidly in recent years," noted Leon Lerman, CEO of Cynerio. "The number of connected medical devices, currently estimated to be approximately 10 billion, is expected to increase to 50 billion over the next 10 years," he told the E-Commerce Times. Worldwide, consumer interest in smart wearables -- those from Apple, Fitbit and various fashion brands -- has been growing, according to IDC. Wearables sales in Q1 exceeded 25 million units. Sales of smart wearables in that period were more than 28 percent higher year over year, while sales of basic weara...

How Smart Should a Home Be?

Image
O ne of the loudest buzzes in the Internet of Things is around smart homes. Vendors have rushed to connect everything imaginable within a house, including lights, appliances, entertainment systems, windows, shades, door locks, ceiling fans, faucets, smoke detectors, security systems, furniture -- basically anything with a battery or power cord now can be connected, and if it doesn't have a power solution, one is in the works. With a swipe of your finger on your tablet or smartphone, you can control anything around you. You can program it to do whatever you want, whenever you want. But just how smart do you want your home to be? When a Smart Home Loses Connections :- With wireless connectivity, you can retrofit any home to become a smart home, but the ultimate way to do it is to start with the construction of a new home, which I just happen to be doing. I'm in the process of building a home that will be both a smart home and a sustainable one that can operate com...

Walmart exploring blockchain technology for new delivery system

Image
American retail giant Walmart is working on a delivery-focused blockchain patent. Walmart published an application on July 5 titled “Delivery Reservation Apparatus and Method”. According to reports, it summarises a new way for managing package reservations in the context of the customer not being available to actually receive it. In a recently released statement by Walmart, the retail giant explained a system of delivery lockers, where the lockers will be located at a customer's home, transportation hub or any other location. The lockers will safeguard the delivered items until their customers actually sign for them. Blockchain technology connect those lockers in order to track which ones are occupied and which ones are vacant. It is a brand new “smart delivery” intellectual property play from Walmart, who had lately submitted a number of similar US patent applications. Walmart stated, “Each space on the docking statio...
